One of the most common questions we hear is “how do we choose a wedding photographer”? Your wedding photos are the one thing left over when the flowers have wilted, the cake is gone, and the venue has been handed over to the next couple.
They’re worth getting right.
Finding the photographer who is the right fit for you is one of the most personal decisions in the entire planning process. Here’s how to approach it like the intentional, informed couple we know you are.

Before you look at pricing, packages, or availability, look at the work.
Photography is an art form, and most photographers have a signature style and editing aesthetic that runs through everything they shoot. Pull up your Pinterest board and compare it honestly to their portfolio. Do the colors feel similar? Does the mood match? Is there a similar sense of light, texture, and emotion?
Most photographers edit consistently within their style — and that’s actually a good thing. It means you know exactly what you’re getting. But it also means that hiring a bright, airy photographer and hoping for moody, cinematic images isn’t a realistic expectation.
Find a few photographers whose work makes you stop scrolling, and you’re already most of the way there.
If you love our process but are drawn to something brighter and more colorful, we also have a second brand — The Glitter Hour Photo Co. — that might be exactly what you’re looking for.

Budget is a real consideration when you choose a wedding photographer, and we’d never pretend otherwise. Here’s a general sense of what different price points typically reflect in the photography market:
Every price point involves trade-offs, and only you can decide what feels right for your priorities.
Photography is the only thing left after your wedding day. The food gets eaten, the flowers fade, the venue gets cleaned up and reset for the next couple. In our completely biased but genuinely heartfelt opinion, it’s worth prioritizing.
And if budget is a real constraint — it’s always worth asking your photographer if they offer payment plans or options like Afterpay. Many do, and it can make a big difference.
Most photographers recommend booking 9-18 months out for the best availability — especially for peak season dates. The earlier you start your search, the more options you’ll have, and the more time you’ll have to save up for the photographer you’re truly excited about. If you’re not engaged yet, it’s never too early to start getting a feel for styles and price ranges so you’re ready to move when the time comes.

Here’s something that doesn’t get talked about enough: you are going to spend more time communicating with your photographer than almost any other vendor on your list. Before your wedding day, during it, and after it.
That relationship matters.
If a photographer offers a call or FaceTime before you book — take them up on it. Get a feel for how they communicate, how they make you feel, and whether you actually enjoy talking to them. Do they ask about your vision? Do they seem genuinely interested in your story?
When you choose a wedding photographer who feels like a knowledgeable friend in your corner, it’s going to make your entire experience feel different than one who simply shows up on the day.

A great photographer does a lot of work before your wedding day ever arrives. It’s worth asking what that actually looks like for each photographer you’re considering — because not everyone has a structured process in place.
For us, that looks like:
Not every photographer will offer all of this, and that’s okay. But knowing what process your photographer has in place gives you a much clearer picture of how supported you’ll feel leading up to your wedding day.

How a photographer communicates during the inquiry process tells you a lot about how the whole experience will feel.
Even if a photographer can’t get you every answer right away, a quick response acknowledging that they received your message goes a long way. You shouldn’t be left wondering if your email disappeared into the void.
As a general benchmark, a response within 48-72 hours on the weekdays — even just a quick “got your message, I’ll be in touch shortly” — is a sign of someone who is organized, professional, and genuinely values your time. That responsiveness should carry through every stage of your experience, from your first inquiry all the way to gallery delivery.

There are incredible photographers with smaller audiences who are absolute hidden gems. Look at the work first and let the numbers be an afterthought.
A longer delivery timeline isn’t a red flag as long as it’s communicated upfront — hand editing a full wedding gallery takes real time and care. A well-curated gallery of the very best images will always feel more cohesive than one padded with duplicates.
Portfolio highlights show their best moments. A full gallery shows you how they handle an entire wedding day — the portraits, the reception, the in-between moments that tell the whole story.
Some photographers offer associate photography packages to cover weddings they can’t personally shoot. This isn’t always a problem — a dedicated associate team that trains regularly under the lead photographer can be a wonderful thing.
But if a photographer can’t give you a clear answer about who will be showing up on your wedding day, that’s worth paying attention to. We’ve seen too many photographers looking for last minute associates in Facebook groups for situations that weren’t an emergency. You (and the photographer) should know who is showing up to shoot your day if you are offered an associate package.

South Carolina has an incredibly talented photography community at every experience level, and we’re genuinely proud to be part of it.
Start researching photographers and getting a sense of pricing as early as possible — even before you get engaged if you can. That way you can plan your engagement timeline around your savings goals and go into the process with a clear, realistic picture of what’s possible for your vision.

When you choose a wedding photographer, find someone whose style makes you stop scrolling. Make sure you genuinely like them as a person. Look for a process that makes you feel taken care of long before your wedding day arrives. And invest as intentionally as your budget allows in something that will outlast every other detail of your celebration.
The right photographer won’t just show up and take pictures. They’ll show up knowing your story, understanding your vision, and ready to capture your day in a way that feels completely, authentically you.

We’re Samantha & Brady, a husband-and-wife wedding photography team based in Columbia, South Carolina. If you’re looking for photographers who genuinely care about getting your vision right — we’d love to connect.
So let's tell it right.
We're not here to make you fit a mold.
We're here to break it with you.
I'm Samantha, the dreamer behind the lens, the one asking "but how did that make you feel?" and probably overthinking your photo timeline (in the best way). I'm driven by the process: the storytelling, the editing, and that magical energy that happens when people feel safe enough to be themselves.
Brady's my other half in life and in business, the people person who makes friends with your entire wedding party and catches those in-between shots no one else saw. While I'm crafting the vision, he's reading the room and making sure everyone feels at ease.
